Gartner have released their Magic Quadrant for 2016 and OMG the BI market has substantially changed according to Gartner.  In fact, for those of us who love more emotive sentences, you could say there has been a blood bath!

Gartner Magic Quadrant BI 2016

Gartner Magic Quadrant BI 2016

The first thing to notice is that there has been a massive clear out of the leaders quadrant compared to 2015.

Only Tableau, Microsoft and Qlik have survived.  We have seen the removal of Microstrategy, SAS, SAP, IBM, Oracle and Information Builders from the leaders quadrant.

The second thing to notice is that Oracle has gone from Gartners Quadrant for BI all together!

The third thing to notice is that Qlik and Microsoft are now much closer to Tableau in the leaders quadrant.

So what has caused this massive reorganisation?  In the words of Gartner:

“The BI and analytics platform market’s multiyear shift from IT-led enterprise reporting to business-led self-service analytics has passed the tipping point.”

So it’s official (from Gartner anyway) the legacy vendors with their massive license upfront, massive and lengthy installation process and suite based approach is dead.

Vive la revolution!

If you want to read the full Gartner BI Magic Quadrant report for 2016 you can download it from the Qlik site here:

If you wait a couple of days I have no doubt you will be able to download a copy from the Microsoft and Tableau websites as well.  (The other vendors sites, maybe not so much.)
